Planning a Bar or Bat Mitzvah

This day was years in the making and happens once in a lifetime. It’s one of the most important milestones in the lives of both parents and child. It’s almost time for your teen to become a bar or bat mitzvah! Make sure the celebration is fun and memorable with a few of these handy planning ideas.

The date of the bar or bat mitzvah maybe assigned years in advance due to the time constraints on the synagogue. Once it’s confirmed planning can officially begin. The celebration may be held at the synagogue or at another location such as a reception hall. The day and time may restrict the options for activities so be sure to keep that in mind.

Make sure the teen is involved when you are considering the guest list. The first consideration is age. Will you plan for all ages, just children, or somewhere in between?  Family and relations will probably be prioritized, but the teen may wish to invite some friends or other important people in their lives, such as teachers or coaches. If both adults and children are invited and your venue allows, it may be a good idea to set up a quieter place at your event for adults to enjoy. This area should have comfortable seating for conversation, and perhaps a bar for relaxation.

A theme will make the festivities memorable and unique. With your teen’s help, of course, choose something fitting just for them. A simple theme of two or three colors, with matching decorations and favors may be just right.  Perhaps a celebration of the teens’ proud moments and accomplishments is the way to usher in their adulthood. Not everyone enjoys being the center of attention, even if the party is about them. For this teen, a more normal party theme based around their interest would be more comfortable. Favorite movies, books, or even a favored charity could fill the role.

Hopefully, there will be plenty of music and dancing for the party. There may be a local band your teen would like when it comes to music. If that isn’t possible then a D.J. or an iPod playlist will suit things better. This is where you can let the teen have a lot of fun. Let them approve or reject songs in the music selection so it becomes a good reflection of them. Of course, there are other kinds of musical entertainment! A karaoke system is great fun for just about everyone. Make it an “America’s got talent” style competition, with the teen as a judge. All in fun though, you don’t want any hard feelings on this special day.

After the above choices have been made it’s time to pick appropriate entertainment options. Multiplayer video games played on big screens is sure to be a hit with teenagers and a few adults as well. Live streaming the event to friends and family who can’t attend is sure to make everyone feel included. A professional photographer can take formal photos of the teen and capture moments around the party. And of course, hiring a caricature artist to create unique drawings for all guests is always an appropriate thank you gift.

What you can expect from your caricature artists

We can draw up to 20 people per hour in black and white, 12 people per hour in color. We can create personalized party favors with graphics or images specific to your party and theme. We provide conversation pieces at the party as guests show off their mementos to one another.

What you will need to provide

Chairs for our artists and your guests. Tables are also suggested, so guests can set drinks and personal items down while they are being drawn. Your artists will need lighting or power outlets to bring lighting in. A quiet area away from the dance floor, but near the entrance to be found easily would be ideal.
