Planning a School Dance doesn’t have to be a harrowing experience. Follow our suggestions to make your Homecoming, Prom or Formal dance preparations easier and create an unforgettable experience for the students!
Gather the troops! School dances are rarely a one-person-does-it-all affair. There is usually a committee of students. Some school faculty and parents will be willing to chip in. Volunteers will be needed for decoration and cleanup. Adult chaperons at the dance will also be a must. Gather many people as early as possible. It’s far better to give extra people the night-off than to scramble to get more volunteers on short notice.
Don’t let a small initial budget be a barrier to a memorable dance. In addition to ticket sales do some fundraising to expand the pocketbook and the possibilities. The sale of candy and other treats are pretty standard as well as car washes. Visit businesses around the school and ask if they’d like to be a sponsor for the event. In return for a donation, the business could be featured in the dance program, or be mentioned by the MC during the event. Don’t forget digital options. Sites like GoFundMe.com or Fundly.com can help get the means to buy a bit more magic.
A theme will help set this dance apart from all the others. For a dance such as a Winter Formal Consider these classics:
- Black and White
- Red Carpet / Hollywood
- Masquerade
- Under the Sea
- White and Gold
With dances such as Prom or Homecoming, there are even more possibilities… Perhaps some that have never been considered before. Get suggestions from the student body. Make sure to have a school administrator remove anything that might be inappropriate. Put the most popular suggestions up for a vote. When the school inevitably selects “Promy McHomecomingface” as the theme, go with the next most popular one. However, be sure to give the students first choice an honorable mention.
While the gym is always an option hopefully fundraising will be successful enough to consider an off-school-grounds venue. Getting away from the classrooms will definitely make the dance a more unique and meaningful experience. The venue may have amenities that may be taken advantage of like an onsite kitchen or an in-house cleanup crew.
No dance is complete without music. Hiring a D.J. is usually a great way to go but don’t overlook the talent hiding right under your nose. Some of the students maybe budding D.J.s In addition to auditioning professional D.J.s consider letting your students audition as well. In addition to a little saving, you could be responsible for launching a career. Be sure to go over the music playlist with your D.J. of choice. Making sure it’s appropriate for the theme of the dance as well as the school. Be sure to include music that’s popular at the moment. Get plenty of student input and know when to compromise. There’s almost always a clean version available for a song that will keep everyone happy and dancing.
Having a photographer is standard, but make sure the attendees of the dance have plenty of ways to make their own memories. Provide a themed background set for students to take selfies and their own photos. Of course, another way to create a unique memento for each guest is to hire a caricature artist to do drawing cute couples, galavanting groups or even intrepid individuals. Funny caricatures of faculty members with be sure to tickle the entire student body!
What you can expect from your caricature artists
We can draw up to 20 people per hour in black and white, 12 people per hour in color. We can create personalized party favors with graphics or images specific to your party and theme. We provide conversation pieces at the party as guests show off their mementos to one another.
What you will need to provide
Chairs for our artists and your guests. Tables are also suggested, so guests can set drinks and personal items down while they are being drawn. Your artists will need lighting or power outlets to bring lighting in. A quiet area away from the dance floor, but near the entrance to be found easily would be ideal.
