Art Heroes: It mostly begins and ends with Frank Frazetta. I’m a huge fantasy buff, and some of my earliest art memories are of marveling at Frazetta covers on Conan the Barbarian, John Carter and Tarzan of the Apes. (Started reading early.)
What do you love about caricatures? I love how the interpretation of a subject is so varied from artist to artist while (hopefully) retaining the likeness. Taking it a step further, I love how even with a single artist the interpretation varies from sitting to sitting. I have a bunch of caricatures of myself now and i love sitting for new ones, mostly because i never know how they will turn out!
For struggling artists: Practice, practice, practice. You can never do enough, and the minute you think you know all there is to know is the minute you will cease to evolve. Look at how other artists do things, expand your repertoire, and always practice, practice, practice. On a related note, learn to let go of your work. It’s a part of you, and if you are anything like most of the artists I have met you want perfection every time. Learn to let it go. Perfection is what you persue, but learn to be satisfied with “good” along the way so you can continue to move on and evolve.
